Going to HOLLYWEED
On NYE Los Angeles local Zachary Fernandez and his partner took it upon themselves to alter the iconic Hollywood sign to read ‘HOLLYWEED’.
This is not the first time the sign has been changed to HollyWeed. Back in 1976 local legend Danny Finegood made the original change as a celebration of the passing of Senate Bill 95, which decriminalised possessing under 28.5 grams of weed (about an ounce).
Zachary says he and his girlfriend altered the sign as a 30 year anniversary tribute to Danny’s original creation. Zach has been arrested by LAPD and released on US$1000 bail. He will face court in February.
It is worth mentioning that Zach did not vandalise the sign at all and achieved the result by using ropes to climb the sign attaching black and white sheets to alter the letters.
Misery guts LA councillor David Ryu made the following statement:
“The Hollywood sign has seen many alteration attempts over the years for people seeking notoriety or commercial gain. Pranks of this nature deplete the resources of our valuable public safety personnel, in both responding to the prank and in responding to the increased crowds and copycat attempts that these incidents generate.”
This actually happened. In 1976, Danny Finegood altered the Hollywood sign to say “Hollyweed”. pic.twitter.com/49rSCEoCES
